Understanding the Industry So You Can Navigate Your Next Role With Confidence

One of the core beliefs behind In Women’s Health is this:
You make better career decisions when you understand how the women’s health industry actually works.

Most people enter this field because they care deeply about impact. Very few have ever been taught how the business of women’s health functions — how companies get funded, what pressures shape leadership decisions, why roles expand or contract, and how investors influence everything from hiring to strategy.

That’s why I’m sharing insights from this week’s Mini-MBA session with Dr. Alice Zhang. Even if you never plan to raise capital, everything we covered is directly tied to your ability to choose the right next role, negotiate well, and build a long-term, resilient career in this space.

1. The Way a Company Is Funded Shapes Your Day-to-Day Reality

We spent time walking through dilution — not for the math, but for what it reveals about how a company actually operates.

When a company raises capital, the founder’s ownership shrinks. Early employees’ ownership shrinks. Investors gain influence. And every round comes with expectations — revenue milestones, growth targets, new product launches — that directly affect how teams operate.

Why this matters for your career:

  • If a company just raised a round, you can expect rapid hiring, shifting priorities, and pressure to grow quickly.

  • If the company is struggling to raise, budgets tighten, roles shrink, and product roadmaps can stall.

  • If the option pool is small or hasn’t been refreshed, your equity may be worth less than you think.

Understanding these dynamics helps you interpret the signals you’re seeing in your interviews or in your current role.

2. The Lead Investor Controls the Terms — and the Culture That Follows

Alice was very clear: the lead investor sets the valuation, terms, and expectations. Everyone else follows.

This means the founder — and by extension, the entire company — becomes accountable to the growth story that investor is underwriting.

Career implication:
If you join a company where the lead investor has a heavy hand, expect decisions to move faster, sometimes abruptly. If you join one where the founder still holds more control, you may see more experimentation, more creativity, and more autonomy — but also more ambiguity.

Understanding the investor profile tells you a lot about what your work life will feel like.

3. The Market Is Shifting — And With It, the Opportunities for Talent

Alice described the last few years as a reset:
2021 was unusually hot. The years after were unusually cold. Capital pulled back. Exits dried up. Many strong companies were stuck in place, unable to raise or exit.

But we are entering a different moment now. More institutional players are paying attention to women’s health — academic centers, larger venture firms, research institutions, and strategic acquirers. The field is maturing.

What this means for you:
Companies need operators more than ever — people who understand markets, reimbursement, product, clinical nuance, marketing, and cross-functional execution. Women’s health is becoming a place where careers can grow for the long term, not just short bursts of startup energy.

Your skills are becoming more valuable, not less.

4. What Makes a Company Truly Worth Joining

One of the most important parts of the session was Alice’s breakdown of how she evaluates whether a company is “investable.” The same criteria apply when you’re deciding whether a company is worth betting your career on.

Investors look for:

  • A real, unmet market need — not a trend, not a slogan.

  • Evidence the product works — scientific or clinical proof, not just anecdotes.

  • Traction — even small revenue numbers matter if they are growing consistently.

  • Credible leadership — founders who know the space, have relationships, and can navigate complexity.

  • A believable path to scale — not wishful thinking.

If you replace “investor” with “job seeker,” the list is identical.

When you’re interviewing, ask yourself:

  • Does this company solve a real problem?

  • Can they show evidence or outcomes?

  • Are customers growing month over month?

  • Does the leadership team have experience in healthcare?

  • Do they understand reimbursement, distribution, or go-to-market paths?

  • Do their plans rely on hope, or on strategy?

These questions protect your career.

5. Why So Many People Feel Whiplash in Women’s Health Companies

Alice also spoke about something people rarely say out loud: the psychological and operational pressure inside early-stage companies is intense.

This isn’t because founders are disorganized or because teams aren’t talented.
It’s because:

  • capital is tight

  • expectations are high

  • exits are delayed

  • pattern recognition is still developing in this field

  • many companies are first-of-their-kind

This is why you may see strategic pivots, hiring freezes, last-minute roadmap changes, or pressure to do more with less. None of that is personal — it’s structural.

Understanding this is part of building a sustainable career in women’s health.

6. Why We’re Sharing This With the Full IWH Community

We’re not sharing slides or recordings from the Mini-MBA — that is content reserved for participants — but we are sharing this summary with the broader community because this knowledge is foundational for your career.

Most people make career decisions based on mission and passion. Those matter, deeply. But your longevity, growth, and ability to lead depend on understanding the business realities underneath.

You need to know:

  • how to evaluate the stability of a company

  • how to read signals about growth or decline

  • what equity actually means in practice

  • how investor behavior shapes your role

  • what makes a company ripe for scaling — or at risk of contraction

This is exactly the gap IWH was built to close.

The more you understand the system, the more control you have over your place within it.

7. What to Do With This Information — Starting Today

If you are:

Exploring your next role:

Use these insights to evaluate whether a company is a strategic career match, not just a mission match.

Trying to pivot into women’s health:

Look for companies with real traction and credibility. They will value your skills — and you’ll have room to grow.

Already inside a company:

Use this lens to understand leadership decisions, industry pressures, and your own advancement opportunities.

Thinking about founding or advising:

Take these lessons seriously. They shape everything.

This Is Why IWH Exists

We are here to give you the knowledge, confidence, tools, and community you need to navigate one of the fastest-growing — and fastest-changing — sectors in healthcare.

Careers grow when understanding grows.

And I want you to have access to the kind of clarity that helps you make not just the next decision, but the right decision.

With gratitude.
