💰 The Business of Women’s Health Case Study - Did You Know?
Religiously Affiliated Hospital Systems
In Washington State, 50% the babies born in the state are born at a Catholic hospital. 4 of the 10 largest hospital chains in the nation are Catholic. In Iowa, nearly half of general hospitals in the state are Catholic or Catholic-affiliated, the highest share among all states.
Why is this happening? In short — the consolidation of hospital systems driven by multiple market forces.
Why does this matter?
These hospitals have “ethical and religious directives” that often conflict with evidence-based standards of practice, constraining care for women. Often at these hospitals, which are sometimes the only one within an hours drive, critical care cannot be delivered, contraception cannot be discussed and reproductive procedures cannot be performed.
Your local hospital could go from being a place where you can access all types of needed women’s healthcare to care being curtailed literally overnight.
And this is happening in places where women’s healthcare care is already limited.
If there is no financial incentive to stop this consolidation, where does this leave us for access to women’s healthcare? How will this impact where and how doctors train and choose to live?
Read more in this case study that we dive into as a part of the In Women’s Health Mini-MBA.
