The Hardest Parts of Getting a Job in Women’s Health — And How to Work Through Them
Every month, our In Women’s Health community comes together for networking, and every time I’m reminded just how much collective wisdom, honesty, and grit lives here. On Friday’s September call, dozens of you shared not just your stories and introductions, but your frustrations too—the hardest parts of navigating today’s job market in women’s health.
What came through loud and clear? Getting a job isn’t just about skills—it’s about breaking through noise, systems, and structures that often feel stacked against you.
Here’s What many of you named as the toughest barriers:
Not hearing back at all (the dreaded ghosting).
Getting to a human instead of being screened out by algorithms.
Breaking through the noise on LinkedIn and differentiating yourself.
Low salaries and equity issues, especially for mission-driven roles.
State-based restrictions on jobs marketed as “remote.”
Ageism and other bias in hiring.
Figuring out where your skills fit in a new sector.
Balancing job searching with family or full-time work.
The loneliness of making progress in an under-resourced field.
The Emotional Weight of the Job Search
One of the most powerful parts of the call wasn’t just the advice—it was the vulnerability. Women shared openly about the toll of sending applications for a year or more without progress, about feeling ghosted, about questioning their worth in the process.
I was struck—and deeply moved—by that honesty. Too often we pretend job searching is purely tactical. It’s also emotional, and in many ways, it’s about resilience. The truth is: rejection hurts. Silence hurts. Carrying uncertainty while still showing up for family, work, and life is heavy.
If that’s you, I see you. I’m sending you a hug. You are not alone.
That’s why we built this community—so you don’t have to do this in isolation. Whether you’re part of our free community or a paid member, we’re with you every step of the way. Tell us what you need—what education, training, or webinars would help most—and we’ll build it together.
It can be especially hard in women’s health, a field many of us feel called to, where the mission is personal. Not landing a role doesn’t just feel like professional rejection—it can feel like the system isn’t valuing your lived experience or your passion.
So let me say it clearly: your mental health matters during the job search. It’s okay to admit the weight of it. It’s okay to feel discouraged. And it’s okay to step back, care for yourself, and still move forward.
In the meantime, I pulled together highlights from our discussion on Friday—where the community talked openly about the hardest parts of the job search, from ghosting and low salaries to figuring out where skills fit. These are the strategies we surfaced together so you can revisit the advice, share it, and put it into practice right away:
10 Strategies to Break Through and Get Hired in Women’s Health
1) Create your “Only You” statement.
Instead of blending in with a list of generic skills, put words to the mix of experience, perspective, and values that only you bring. It’s the line you want a hiring manager to remember after reading 50 resumes. It goes everywhere - LinkedIn, your resume, your interview and more. We talked about this in our recent Resumes for Women’s Health workshop.
2) Tell your story in three lengths.
Have a 1–2 sentence intro, a 30-second version for networking, and a longer narrative for interviews. You’ll feel less scrambled and more confident no matter the situation.
3) Beat the algorithms.
Yes, resumes still get filtered by machines. Take 10 minutes to mirror the language in the job description (tools, titles, skills) so the system doesn’t toss you out before a human even looks. See our recent Writing a Resume for Women’s Health workshop for more tips.
4) Go direct.
Several members shared that sending a short note or even a 90-day plan to the hiring manager unlocked interviews. Don’t wait for the portal—sometimes the straight line is the fastest way in. This market is requiring that next level of creativity to break through. Show skills valuable to a startup (if that’s where you’re looking) — resilience, versatility, problem solving, ambiguity and more!
5) Treat networking like oxygen, not an afterthought.
Inside IWH, warm intros are gold. A referred candidate is 4–5x more likely to be seen. Lean on this community—we’re here for that. But, it’s still not as much of a guarantee as it used to be.
6) Make your expertise visible.
Don’t just say you’re passionate about women’s health—show it. Have a full content strategy, share a POV, or volunteer to speak on a panel. Every visible proof point shifts how people perceive your readiness - and helps you get discovered with AI too.
7) Reframe rejection as data.
It’s brutal to get ghosted. But silence isn’t proof you’re not qualified—it often means the role changed, budgets shifted, or timing was off. Treat every “no” as a chance to refine, not a final verdict. Always ask for the feedback!
8) Protect your energy.
The search can eat you alive if you let it. Find the limit that works for you. That’s progress without burnout.
9) Use fractional or project work as a bridge.
Consulting, part-time, or contract work can get your foot in the door, help you build credibility, and often turn into full-time offers. Several members are already carving this path.
10) Stay anchored in community.
Job searching can feel like you’re on an island. But you’re not. Every networking call, every mastermind, every intro here is proof that you’re part of something bigger—one that’s rewriting the playbook for careers in women’s health.
This is the worst time in a long time to be looking for a job. But you are not alone. We are here to support you — and yes, members of our In Women’s Health community are getting jobs at women’s health companies regularly and often. It can be done. We’re here to help.

Imagine if Women’s Health Worked - You Can Build It
What if we could focus on our health, not our healthcare?
Imagine a system where:
Every mother, regardless of race or zip code, receives consistent pre- and postnatal care.
Menopause, endometriosis, and chronic pain aren’t dismissed — they’re researched, understood, and treated.
Policy and funding finally reflect the reality that women make up half the population.
Your gender, age, and income don’t determine the quality of care you receive.
This isn’t just a thought exercise. It’s the future we can build — if we’re willing to pool power the way other industries already do. That means votes, visibility — and yes, dollars. Because in Washington, scale matters. And women’s health has never had it.
I’m building this platform alongside 300+ women’s health execs.
We are pooling our resources, building real power, and finally putting women’s health at the center of research, policy, and leadership.
You can join us too.

Featured Roles
Jackie Rotman is the founder and CEO of the Center for Intimacy Justice (CIJ). She holds a BA in Public Policy from Stanford, an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business, and an MPA from Harvard Kennedy School. Before CIJ, she founded a youth arts nonprofit (Creative Network, formerly Everybody Dance Now!), worked in women’s health investing, and has had her writing and investigations on sexual and reproductive health and online censorship featured in major outlets. In 2022 she led a landmark investigation showing that 100% of the women’s health orgs surveyed experienced ad rejections on Meta, which triggered changes in Meta’s ad policies.
The Center for Intimacy Justice is a nonprofit focused on equity and well-being in people’s intimate lives, especially addressing how Big Tech platforms suppress or censor information related to women’s and under-represented genders’ sexual and reproductive health. CIJ works through research, policy, legal advocacy, and public pressure to push for changes in platform ad policies, content moderation practices, and regulation, with the goal of ensuring access to accurate health information online. Their work has included reports influencing congressional hearings and FTC complaints, and widespread media coverage.
