📢 Policy Spotlight for the IWH Community: The MAHA Report & Women’s Health

The Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) Report dropped this week — and while it never mentions women’s health by name, it may be one of the most important women’s health policy documents of the year.

It’s not the report we as a women’s health ecosystem would have written.
It’s not framed through a gender lens.
I wish it included so much more.

But if we’re serious about making change, we have to align with the priorities of the agencies in power — and act strategically within the moment we’re in.

This year, the Make America Healthy Again agenda is HHS’s health priority, and it centers on childhood chronic disease.

But read between the lines, and it opens a powerful window for women’s health.

👩‍🍼 Maternal Health Is the Moment
Right now, the clearest path to advancing women’s health is through maternal health.

The word maternal is mentioned seven times in the MAHA report — and this line says it all:

"During gestation, fetal development depends on maternal nutrition — influencing everything from membrane composition and mitochondrial integrity to nervous system wiring and hormone regulation. This programming ultimately determines the child’s long-term metabolic, cognitive, and immune resilience."
Despite that, over 50% of pregnant and postpartum women’s diets come from ultra-processed foods — with clear downstream consequences for both mother and child."

This isn’t just a pediatric crisis. It’s a women’s health emergency.

🥫 SNAP & School Nutrition
Over 20% of American children are on SNAP. Many of their mothers are, too. The report calls out these programs for inadvertently subsidizing junk food.
How do we redesign these systems with maternal-child health in mind?

💔 Teen Mental Health — Especially Girls
1 in 4 teenage girls had a major depressive episode last year. Over 57% report persistent sadness. How can we prioritize the mental health of our teen girls in women's health?

🧬 Hormonal Disruptors & Chemical Load
Environmental toxins and food additives — like propylparaben and titanium dioxide — are impacting puberty, fertility, and long-term hormonal health. There's a lot we can work with here for women's health.

🧪 PLUS: The IVF Report Is Done
The White House’s IVF report is finalized and expected to drop imminently. It will be the second major policy signal this year tied to reproductive health — and one more reason to stay engaged.

And yes — there are rumblings that HHS may prioritize menopause too. Stay tuned.

Policy wins require momentum and alignment. Policy windows open and close. In this moment, the MAHA Report gives us a window to align maternal and women’s health efforts with this administration’s top priorities.

We can wait for the perfect agenda. Or we can embed women’s health into the one that’s going to move anyway. Let’s go.
