The One Question That Separates the Women Who Get Hired From Everyone Else

Most people can answer “what do you do?” in ten seconds. Almost no one can answer “why you?” — and that gap is costing them.

There’s a question I ask every single person who comes through the Career Mastermind in the first session. It stops people cold every time. Not because it’s complicated. Because they’ve never actually been asked it before.

The question is this: What do you bring to a role that someone else with your same resume doesn’t?

Not your title. Not your years of experience. Not a list of your responsibilities. What is the specific, differentiated value that you — and only you — deliver?

Most people pause. Then they start describing their resume back to me. Then they trail off. That’s the gap. And it’s not a credentials gap. It’s a positioning gap.

The women who break through don’t have better resumes. They have a clearer story. They know exactly what makes them different, they can say it in one sentence, and they say the same version of it everywhere — until a hiring manager feels certain, not just hopeful.

Why “why you?” is the only question that matters

Every hiring decision in women’s health comes down to one thing: does this person clearly solve my problem better than the other candidates in front of me? The hiring manager isn’t asking “is this person qualified?” They’re asking “why this person?”

If you can’t answer that question about yourself in one sentence, a hiring manager can’t answer it either. And when they can’t answer it, they move on. It’s not personal. It’s pattern matching. They have 1,000 applications and limited cognitive bandwidth.

The women who break through — the ones who get the warm intro, land the interview, and walk out with an offer — have done the work to answer this question clearly. They know what makes them different. They can say it out loud in thirty seconds. And they say the same version of it in their resume, their LinkedIn headline, their cover letter, and across the table in an interview. That coherence is what creates confidence in a hiring manager. It’s what makes someone feel like a known quantity — someone worth betting on.

The unique value add problem

Here’s what makes this hard: most people have never had to think about what makes them different from the next person with their same resume. We’re taught to be good at our jobs. We’re not taught to articulate why being good at our job in our specific way matters.

So people undersell. They describe what they do instead of the impact they create. They list tasks instead of outcomes. They present themselves as solid and reliable instead of differentiated and irreplaceable.

Or they go the other direction — they generalize. “I’m passionate about women’s health.” “I love working cross-functionally.” “I have a background in both science and business.” These phrases appear in thousands of applications. They signal enthusiasm. They don’t signal fit.

The unique value add lives in the specific intersection of your skills, your experiences, and the particular problems you’ve solved. It’s the thing that makes a hiring manager think: we actually need someone who’s done exactly that. Finding it takes deliberate work. But once you find it, everything changes.

What it looks like when someone finds it

That’s the moment I see over and over. Someone arrives thinking they know their story. Then we start pulling on the thread — what’s the specific problem you solve? What’s the outcome you’re known for? Why you, not the next person with your same background? — and they realize the story they’ve been telling is a job description, not a value proposition. It’s uncomfortable for about twenty minutes. Then something shifts. And the version of themselves they walk out with is the one that actually gets callbacks.

The one sentence that opens doors

When someone lands it — when they can say their unique value add in a single, specific sentence — you can feel the shift. Not just in how they present themselves. In how they carry themselves.

That sentence becomes the through-line for everything: the top of their resume, the hook in their cover letter, the answer to “tell me about yourself” in an interview, the way they introduce themselves at a conference or at the end of a warm intro email. It’s not a tagline. It’s a North Star.

And it’s what separates the people who feel stuck — good at their work, applying everywhere, hearing nothing — from the people who start getting pulled toward opportunities they didn’t even apply for. The work isn’t complicated. But it is specific. And almost no one does it without structure and someone pushing them to go deeper.
