🔥 Jobs In Women's Health | January 13, 2024
69 new jobs this week from Midi, ACOG, Care + Wear, Elvie, Parsley Health and more!
Welcome to all of our new subscribers this week!
Las week was one of the most prominent healthcare conferences of the year in San Francisco called JPM, or the JPM Morgan Healthcare Conference. Hosted by JP Morgan, it used to be a bunch of healthcare finance people in suits getting together to talk about new deals in the new year, but it’s evolved over the last 10 years into an important gathering, even if you don’t have an “official” ticket.
(More on how to do conferences like a hustler in another post)
I had the flu so I wasn’t there — and had major FOMO the whole time.
BUT, there were a lot of women’s health events and I wanted to highlight some of my network’s thoughts from the event as they relate to women’s health.
Here’s what I saw and heard from JPM and my thoughts on what’s to come in 2024:
General market interest in women’s health continues to grow. There were significantly more women’s health events than in years past - the max I heard was 8 in one day and one so oversubscribed they had to make other arrangements. This is a good sign that more mainstream interest in the category and more women’s health leaders at the conference. We also had the first keynote address and panel discussion at JPM led by Elizabeth Comen, MD - "Shifting the Paradigm in Women's Health Investment."
Women’s health is being mentioned next to other important topics like AI. A few weeks ago the Amazon CTO mentioned women’s health as a key opportunity in 2024. The mainstream is starting to connect the need in women’s health with the whitespace available for innovation (and therefore returns) — the momentum continues to grow.
Consolidation (and extinction) is coming. This will be the year for consolidation in women’s health. We will see related brands merging as bridge funding dries up for brands that started in the heyday of 2019 - 2021. Some will not survive but….
Stronger companies will emerge: This will reset the innovation field and pave the way for profitability-focused brands to emerge in our next wave of innovation.
Collaboration is accelerating our industry: Working together has always been a hallmark of women’s health, but it’s happening more often and faster now as companies look for unique ways to work together to increase revenue and decrease cost in this post-privacy & CAC-driven world.
More people are framing the opportunity around unmet needs: With “big” categories like fertility and menopause having a decent amount of innovation already, innovators and funders are starting to look at the next phase of innovation available around unmet needs in categories that primarily impact women.
The government is waking up to women’s health. Post Roe, many branches of the government from the FDA to the White House are looking at women’s health with a keen eye. Dr. Carolyn M. Mazure, chair of the first-ever White House Initiative on Women's Health Research, made special opening remarks for the critical JPM discussion on "Engaging Government in Accelerating Women's Health Innovation". The Initiative was launched by President Biden in November 2023 and led by First Lady Jill Biden. Multiple attendees from the FDA and others were also seen at events throughout San Fran last week.
