From Research to Real-World Impact: How to Translate an Academic or Public-Sector Career into Women’s Health
It’s been a rough year for researchers and public-sector workers in women’s health. From millions of dollars in women’s health research being cut to entire programs eliminated at the CDC, USAID and others, academic and public health talent in this space has never been hit harder.
I’ve seen this first-hand. Over 20% of the 51 members of the Women’s Health Career Mastermind cohorts this year have come from academic or public-sector settings. Across more than 60 one-on-one conversations with participants, I hear the same question again and again: How do I take the work I’ve already done — the grants, the studies, the policies — and translate it into the language of industry?
Remember: the world outside your lab, agency, or field site doesn’t know your PI is the most cited ovarian-health researcher on earth. It doesn’t recognize the elegance of your methodology or the politics it took to shepherd a multi-country program through three ministries. It knows outcomes, budgets, adoption, and momentum.
That’s the translation challenge. This is what we’ve worked through with lots of talent looking to make this transition as a part of the Women’s Health Carer Mastermind (starting Monday), a 4-week program that helps you create the toolbox you need to find your dream role in women’s health.
Here’s the advice I give most often that have gotten Mastermind participants interviews and roles at places like Oura, Maven, Kindbody, Pomelo Care, Pacify, Evvy, Aavia and more.
1. Translate “studies” into impact at scale
Often I see lists of research projects without any context. Don’t itemize one by one. Roll them up and quantify the reach. Show decision-makers the system you moved, not just the protocol you followed.
CV: “Co-investigator on three ovarian-cancer studies.”
Industry: “Led 12-study portfolio across 3 therapeutic areas; enrolled 4,500 women across multi-site trials; findings informed two payer coverage updates.”
2. Treat grants like capital raised
Investors brag about how much they’ve raised. You should, too. Pair dollar amounts with the outcomes those funds unlocked.
CV: “Recipient of NIH R01 grant.”
Industry: “Secured $3.2M in competitive NIH and DoD funding; managed $1.1M annual operating budget; funding advanced ovarian cancer diagnostics from bench to early trials.”
3. Position publications as thought leadership
Journal articles and presentations are proof of influence. But don’t assume industry readers know the journals in your field. Contextualize their importance.
CV: “Published 15 peer-reviewed articles.”
Industry: “Published 15 peer-reviewed articles cited 1,200+ times; keynote speaker at global maternal-health summit with 5,000 attendees; research informed two national clinical guidelines.”
4. Frame collaborations as ecosystem building
Partnerships show you can convene and scale — skills every business values. Demonstrate where you brought stakeholders together and the impact that created.
CV: “Collaborated with colleagues at 3 universities.”
Industry: “Built 12-institution consortium (universities + health systems) to standardize perimenopause intake; created common data model now adopted by 4 digital-health vendors.”
5. Recast teaching and mentorship as leadership development
Teaching is talent development. Show how you built people and pipelines.
CV: “Lectured undergraduates; supervised PhD candidates.”
Industry: “Recruited, trained, and mentored 22 graduate researchers; alumni now leading programs at WHO, HHS, and femtech startups.”
6. Translate methods into product or process innovation
Don’t bury your methodology — elevate it as innovation that saves time, money, or patients. Use plain language that someone outside academia can grasp.
CV: “Developed novel data-collection framework.”
Industry: “Introduced data-collection model that reduced trial dropout by 40%; adopted by 3 international research consortia, cutting recruitment costs by $250K annually.”
7. Describe policy as systems change
Policies matter when they travel. Anchor them in behavior and population outcomes — and highlight how you aligned stakeholders to make them happen.
CV: “Drafted maternal-health policy brief.”
Industry: “Co-authored maternal-health policy implemented across 200 hospitals; expanded access for 1.2M women; trained 350 clinicians on new protocols.”
8. Anchor every claim with reach and scale
Business readers skim for numbers. Add them everywhere. Numbers make readers stop — they immediately signal capability and impact.
CV: “Supported clinical trial design.”
Industry: “Designed protocol impacting 12,000 patients across 18 sites; created dashboards used by 7 PI teams for weekly go/no-go decisions.”
9. Always add context
Don’t assume your audience knows the significance of your work. They may not recognize your lab or PI’s stature, and they may not understand the science without translation. Lead with plain language, then layer in the technical detail.
Example: Instead of “Worked in Dr. X’s lab on reproductive endocrinology,” say: “Conducted hormone research under Dr. X, whose work shaped the first FDA-approved diagnostic in ovarian health.”
10. Shift from an academic CV to a business résumé
A CV is an archive; a résumé is a sales sheet. Industry wants impact, not exhaustiveness. Keep it to 1–2 pages, highlight money raised, people led, and outcomes achieved. Remember, the goal of your resume is to get you the interview — it’s what hiring managers use to “swipe right.”
CV: “Co-authored 14 publications on ovarian cancer diagnostics.”
Industry: “Advanced ovarian cancer diagnostics adopted by 3 startups; secured $3.2M in funding; reached 2,500 patients in early trials; reduced time-to-result by 28%.”
Why it matters
Women’s health companies are getting 1,000–3,000 applications for each role. They don’t have time to decode an academic CV or a GS-14 job description. They do recognize leaders who can marshal resources, move people, and deliver measurable change. Your past already proves that — these reframes make it legible.
Our alumni say the shift is as emotional as it is tactical. Kayla Steffy credits the Mastermind with giving her “the structure, accountability, and encouragement” to finally move forward. Catherine St. Clair describes winning interviews because she “felt confident telling [her] story.” Soni explains that it gave her “the clarity and confidence” to land her role. Others call it catalytic — a fire starter, a confidence boost, the moment they stopped searching alone.
If you’re standing at the edge of this transition, know this: you don’t need to reinvent yourself. You already have the skills, the expertise, and the track record. What you need is translation. Once you shift your story into the language of outcomes, scale, and momentum, the doors to women’s health industry roles swing open.
Join us as we make this shift together next week.
