Strategy vs. Execution: What Founders Actually Want to Hear in Interviews

I recently had a conversation with a Series A women’s health founder you will all know that stuck with me.

She’s building in real time - raising capital, hiring a lean team, and getting her product into the hands of consumers. And like many early-stage founders, she’s been in back-to-back interviews with candidates eager to join the mission. But one thing keeps coming up.

Too many candidates - especially those looking to switch into women’s health - are showing up with a strategy-only mindset. They want to own the roadmap, lead high-level initiatives, and "shape the vision" of the company.

But as she put it:
“If someone talks only about strategy in an interview, it’s an immediate red flag. At a startup, everyone needs to execute - regardless of the stage. And if they can’t roll up their sleeves, I can’t hire them.”

She’s not alone. At Series A - and frankly, well beyond that - strategy is table stakes. What makes someone stand out is their ability to turn ideas into action.

Why This Matters in Women’s Health Startups

If you're trying to break into women’s health, especially at the startup stage, it's essential to understand where these companies are. Most are newly funded, navigating product-market fit, and building under tight constraints.

That means:

  • There’s no such thing as “just” strategy. The same person mapping the roadmap might be updating onboarding flows, answering customer emails, or setting up pilot programs.

  • Founders are hiring people who can do. They don’t need a five-year plan. They need someone who can get the next version out the door - and learn from what happens next.

  • Interviews are signals. If you focus only on vision and strategy, you’re signaling a mismatch with what the company needs most right now.

How to Show You Can Execute

If you want to stand out in interviews, don’t just show that you can think. Show that you can build. A few ways to do that:

  1. Pair strategy with action.
    Don’t just say you identified a problem. Explain what you did about it—and what happened. Example:
    “We saw a drop in Gen Z retention, so I ran a 6-week A/B test on onboarding content. We increased Day 7 retention by 18%.”

  2. Use verbs that show you made things happen.
    Launched, built, fixed, tested, created, led. These tell a better story than supported or oversaw.

  3. Be specific about your tools and process.
    What did you use? How did you manage the work? What did you learn? Concrete details show you’ve done the work, not just thought about it.

  4. Understand the founder mindset.
    Every hire at Series A is high stakes. Founders need people they can trust in the trenches, not just around the whiteboard.

  5. Use a 30-60-90 Day Framework

    Founders want to know how quickly you can plug in and start contributing. Create a 30-60-90 day plan for the role ahead of the interview and work into the conversation what you would do in the role. It shows that you’ve thought through how you’d execute.

  6. Back It Up with KPIs

    Execution isn’t just about effort—it’s about outcomes. Show that you focus on results by naming the metrics you moved. Talk about conversion rates, NPS improvements, cost savings, retention lifts, or operational time saved.

  7. Frame the How, Not Just the What

    Too many candidates focus on what the company should do. Execution-ready candidates talk about how they’ll make it happen.

  8. Ask Operational Questions

    Show that you think like a problem-solver, not just a strategist. Great operational questions include:

    • “Where are things getting stuck between teams right now?”

    • “What’s one operational process that hasn’t been touched in a while, but should be?”

    • “What does success look like in this role in the first 3 months?”

  9. Share the Friction, Not Just the Wins

    Real execution is messy. Talk about projects that didn’t go according to plan—and how you adapted, problem-solved, and kept things moving.

  10. Check Your Mindset

    Execution isn’t just about skill—it’s a mindset. If you're not ready to operate in ambiguity, shift gears quickly, and take imperfect action, an early-stage women’s health startup may not be the right fit.

Final Thought

Strategy is important. But in early-stage women’s health, execution is what earns you trust - and the job.
