How to Break Into Women’s Health (From Someone Who Did It After Goldman Sachs)
Career + capital insights from Colleen Foster, GP at Amboy Street Ventures

When Colleen Foster joined our Women’s Health Mini-MBA, she delivered a masterclass in how to pivot with power. From running the global commodities desk at Goldman Sachs to becoming a General Partner at one of the leading women’s health funds, Colleen broke down exactly what it takes to build a second career with purpose—and real influence—in this industry. No fluff. No theory. Just the real strategy behind how she made the leap—and what she looks for now in the founders and leaders shaping what’s next.

Colleen’s Career Advice for Women Breaking Into the Field

  • Your past is an asset—even if it doesn’t look like it.
“I came from commodities. On paper, that doesn’t translate to women’s health. But I understood capital, regulation, supply chains, and risk.” What mattered was being able to translate that expertise into a new context. Colleen didn’t pretend it was a clean fit—she connected the dots for others by showing how her experience operating in capital-intensive, highly regulated industries could serve this space.

  • Learn by doing. Sit on boards. Show up in the room.
Before becoming a GP, Colleen joined the board of a telehealth platform funded by Planned Parenthood. “That’s when I realized how much I didn’t know,” she said. But instead of holding back, she leaned in—shadowing conferences, tagging along to investor meetings, and absorbing everything she could. “You don’t break in by waiting. You show up, listen, and figure it out.”

  • Don’t undersell yourself.
Colleen shared that many of the top hires she made at Goldman Sachs didn’t come from finance backgrounds. “They were history majors and philosophy majors. They looked at the world through a wide lens. They questioned how things had been done—and wanted to do them better.” In women’s health, the ability to challenge convention and navigate ambiguity is more valuable than pedigree.

  • Choose your leaders as carefully as your role.
“You’re not just joining a company—you’re joining a founder’s values, reputation, and future deal pipeline,” she told us. “Make sure you know who you're going to work for and with.” Having seen both “fabulous and torturous investors,” Colleen emphasized that choosing the right people—especially in this ecosystem—is as important as choosing the right job.

  • Be honest about what you don’t know—then go learn it.
“I didn’t try to bluff my way into healthcare innovation,” Colleen said. “I asked questions. I showed up with humility.” She surrounded herself with scientific and operational experts, asked better questions at every step, and earned trust by being clear about where she brought value—and where she needed to grow.

  • Don’t wait for permission. Start with one conversation.
Her entire path into women’s health started with a bold outreach: “I met Alexis McGill Johnson [now CEO of Planned Parenthood] at a cocktail party. I emailed her afterward, not knowing if she'd even respond. That email changed everything.” It led to board seats, mentorship, and eventually, a new career. “Your story doesn’t have to be linear,” she reminded us. “You just have to begin.”

Bonus: Fundraising & Finance Lessons from the Inside

Colleen also pulled back the curtain on how deals get done, what investors are actually looking for, and why women’s health founders face a unique set of hurdles—and opportunities.

  • You need a champion inside the fund.
“That’s the person who owns your deal. They lead diligence, write the memo, pitch to the investment committee, and fight for it internally. Without a champion, you won’t make it through the funnel.”

  • There’s a reason it feels hard—it is.
Amboy screens around 1,000 companies a year. They do diligence on about 60. Take 25 to investment committee. Fund around five. “It’s not personal,” she reminded us. “It’s about the alignment of story, strategy, and timing.”

  • ‘No’ doesn’t mean never.
“We’ve passed on seed rounds and led the Series A. The difference was the founder’s ability to hit milestones, communicate progress, and keep us in the loop.”

  • Investors are tracking who comes back and how.
Colleen emphasized the power of consistent investor updates. “It builds trust and familiarity over time. By the time we take a second meeting, we already know who you are—and how you’ve executed.”

  • Women’s health is still drastically underfunded.
While interest in the sector has grown, the capital is still disproportionately small. “We’re seeing the most promise in infrastructure—care delivery, Medicaid innovation, reimbursement models—not just direct-to-consumer brands.”

  • And remember, LPs evaluate funds the same way GPs evaluate founders.
“When we raised fund two, we had to go back to our first investors and prove we delivered. It’s no different than you going back to raise your next round. Everyone’s watching who showed up—and who doubled down.”

Colleen reminded us that women’s health isn’t just a market opportunity—it’s a leadership challenge. One that demands grit, adaptability, strategy, and community.

“Find something you care about. Tell people your story. And then—get to work.”
