Learn from the Leaders: Gennev Founder Jill Angelo Gives Us Her Top 10 Insights on Building, Scaling and Exiting a Business in Women’s Health

This conversation was part of our Women’s Health Mini-MBA. Click here to learn more about how to learn from Founders like Jill in February as a part of our next cohort.

We recently had an incredible session discussing business models with the amazing Jill Angelo, Founder of Gennev and President of Virtual Health at Unified Women’s Healthcare. If you missed it, here's a snapshot of the top takeaways:

1ļøāƒ£ Start with the Problem: Successful business models identify and solve an "emergency room" problem – something urgent and necessary. Jill's journey began by addressing the unmet need for menopause care, a space underserved for decades.

2ļøāƒ£ The Power of Iteration: Jill's business evolved from selling a single product (lubricant) to becoming the first online menopause telehealth clinic. This evolution was driven by customer insights and willingness to pivot based on market needs.

3ļøāƒ£ Testing Payment Models: Before scaling, Jill tested several payment models manually (e.g., pay-per-visit vs. subscription bundles). This agile approach allowed them to discover the model that resonated with consumers without overcommitting to costly systems.

4ļøāƒ£ Transitioning from D2C to B2B: Moving from a direct-to-consumer (D2C) model to working with insurers and employers required Jill and her team to build entirely new skills and relationships while learning to "speak the language" of payers.

5ļøāƒ£ The Value of Persistence: Category creation is challenging, especially in a stigmatized area like menopause. Jill emphasized the importance of sticking around long enough for the market to mature – and being ready when it does.

6ļøāƒ£ Scaling Responsibly: After Gennev’s acquisition by Unified Women’s Healthcare, Jill shifted focus to sustainable, profitable growth. This includes balancing rapid expansion with maintaining exceptional patient and provider experience.

7ļøāƒ£ Mission-Driven Hiring: Jill’s advice for hiring? Look for mission-aligned individuals who can thrive in ambiguity and bring transferable skills. For those pivoting into women's health, finding mentors and warm introductions is key.

8ļøāƒ£ Leverage Data Thoughtfully: Gathering de-identified data is a powerful tool for driving innovation in healthcare. Gennev’s EMR system now supports advanced predictive care models for menopause.

9ļøāƒ£ Learning from Failure: Jill reminded us that failure is part of innovation. Sharing lessons learned—whether from startups or corporate initiatives—can make you a stronger candidate in women's health.

šŸ”Ÿ Bold Choices, Big Impact: Jill’s decision to prioritize partnerships over independence (via Gennev’s acquisition) was guided by her North Star: ensuring menopause care reaches as many women as possible.

šŸ‘ Thank you Jill for sharing your valuable time with us! Always love catching up with such a legend in our space.

Expertise Needed: Insurance, Reimbursement and AARP

Over the holidays and into January, I’m looking to talk to a few experts in:

Insurance - Especially in designing insurance benefits plans and what that would look like to do so. I’m especially interested in the nuances for women’s health in the health and life insurance sectors.

Reimbursement - What are the things we need to do in order to make women’s health more profitable? Or what changes to reimbursement need to be made in order to accelerate your business?

AARP - I’d love to talk to someone who has worked at AARP or another interest organization of similar size or scope.

If this is you, I’d love to spend some time together virtually — happy to trade connections, career advice or help in any other way for your time. Reach out to me at [email protected].
